Networking your way to success

Blog post header - an image of people shaking hands in the background, with the words 'networking your way to success' on top

I was going to write this week's blog post about a recent project I've been working on with Mick from Marshall's Drone Services, but have decided to defer that for a week to tell you about how this project actually came about - networking.

I know, that dreaded word - 'networking'! It's enough to make anyone nervous, but for someone who actually has an anxiety disorder, the idea of networking literally makes my blood run cold and me want to run for the hills. Having said that, I am determined to make a success of my little business, so I am trying to embrace networking and all the opportunities it can offer. I hate talking about myself and don't like coming across as too 'salesy', but I've quickly learned to just talk passionately about what I do and why I do it; that passion speaks volumes, much more than a prepared sales pitch.

I started with an online networking event run by Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, where I met Mick in one of the breakout rooms. We connected on LinkedIn afterwards and then began to discuss the possibility of me redesigning Mick's website. After a coffee and a chat in our local Costa, Mick agreed to hire me (yippee!) and I got straight to work on his website.

I then attended two in-person networking events, one by The Marketing Meet-up (a must-have group for anyone in the marketing industry!) and the other by Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce. At the second event, I ran into Mick again and we were able to have a catch-up about both of our businesses and how the website was doing. He then also kindly introduced me to some of his contacts. And just this week, I attended another online session, this time with Federation of Small Businesses (South East), where I met yet more people from very different backgrounds based across the South East, not just Kent.

Yes, I have met lots of other people offering similar services, but there is plenty of work available for all of us, and it's fantastic to be able to recommend another marketer if I'm unavailable, or if I don't quite offer what the client needs. These networks are kind of like support groups in a way, and I find that a great way to look at them; we all just want to help each other succeed. There's so much positivity here.

If it hadn't been for networking, I would never have even heard of Mick (or him about me!) let alone actually had the opportunity to work with him. And I've now met so many other people, who all know yet more people and more businesses. And that's the thing about networking; you might not get business from it directly (and you shouldn't go into it expecting to) but it's about making connections and being the type of company that someone remembers, so that when someone they know has a need for your services, you come straight to mind!

So, get out there and start networking. If I can do it, honestly anyone can.
