How I redesigned a drone/ photography website

Blog post header - redesigning a drone/photography website

When I first spoke with Mick from Marshall's Drone Services, it was instantly clear that not only does he love what he does, but he also knows what he's talking about. Unfortunately, his website at the time did not do him justice at all. I made some suggestions as to changes I could make, and suggested he started a blog, as this is a great and (relatively) easy way to draw traffic to your website. Mick agreed with my suggestions and I began work on redesigning his website.

One thing I was keen to recreate and use in the new website, was the gold colour of Mick's logo. It featured as the background for his original homepage, so I decided to use it as a colour block against the black of the new background; this also made his logo really stand out. Using this colour scheme on every page created the sense of continuity, and enabled the very long home page of the original website to be broken down into more accessible, individual pages.

The homepage now gives an overview of the website and what Marshall's Drone Services offers, with each of the pages exploring different aspects of the business. This makes it much easier for a visitor to digest the information, as well as making it much more straightforward for them to find what they are looking for.

In the 'About' section, I have been able to demonstrate how it is a local, family-run business, and actually introduce Mick and Haley to their potential clients. People love to work with and hire people, not companies, so if you can present your business owners in this way, it makes them much more personable and the visitors may then be more likely to hire them.

Currently, the Services page lists all four services that Mick can provide, but as his business grows and he gets more footage that he can use online, we will be able to expand on each of the services and ideally put them on individual pages. This will not only showcase Mick's talents and abilities with the drones and equipment, but will also give inspiration to visitors about what is possible with a drone.

Mick very quickly provided me with all the photo and video content I needed for the website, including his logos and logos of companies he's worked with. I was able to reference these companies in the Case Studies page I created, and I was sure to include back-links to the businesses' websites, as back-links are so important for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and how well a website performs.

The gallery was essential for this type of business, as visitors need to be able to see the results that can be achieved using a drone, a go-pro, etc. Again, this will be updated and added to as time goes on and Mick gets more footage.

Initially, Mick wasn't sure about the idea of a blog, but once I explained the benefits and that it doesn't need to be complicated, he agreed that it would be worth having. Even something as simple as writing a post about the latest job he worked on, would be sufficient in adding content to his website and having new content to share on social media; all of which drives visitors to his website, ultimately in the hope of converting them into sales.

And finally, we had the Contact page, which obviously provides straightforward means for a visitor to contact Mick to get more information.

Here is the quick video of the original website on a computer:

And here is a snapshot of the newly revamped website:

Overall, the website took about a week to complete and Mick was delighted with the results, saying, "Absolutely outstanding service, [Lucy] created our new company website and was exactly as we wanted and suits our company profile perfectly, can highly recommend".
