A productive workspace = a successful business; how I work from home

Having somewhere specific to work makes all the difference to my work/life balance.

When I work from home, I am fortunate enough to have a garden office, which I have set out as a professional space to be able to be creative and work effectively.

A cup of tea or coffee to enjoy as I work is a must-have (more often than not, it's a caramel latte), and it is usually in my favourite over-sized Harry Potter-themed mug! I also have an array of different coloured pens, which I use to help categorise and clarify my ideas. I usually also have music playing in the background, as I work better with some background noise, but I have a very eclectic taste, so it's difficult to predict what I'll be listening to at any one time. I often find myself singing along to whatever it is, so it's probably a good thing I work alone most of the time!

My large desk provides plenty of space for making notes (which I always do with pen and paper, before creating detailed digital files) and working on my laptop. I also have a more informal area off to one side, with a comfy sofa where clients and I can talk through their requirements and how Crescent Digital Marketing can assist them.

I also conduct business meetings at my clients' offices, which is usually preferable for the initial meetings, as it enables me to better understand their work ethos and how exactly I can help them grow. Follow-up meetings can also be held online, in order to be more time- and cost-efficient.

Every now and then I find it helpful to get out and work somewhere different; so I often visit local, independent cafes (I'm always keen to support local - particularly Nutmegs Patisserie in Rainham!) and spend the afternoon working away on my laptop sampling some scrummy cake and coffee! A different environment can help give a fresh perspective on your work and enable you to come up with new ideas or a different way of viewing something. It's also nice to sometimes see other people rather than just working alone.

What is your work space like? Do you work from home or in an office? What do you find helps you to be more productive?
